Some collaborations feel special from the very first moment. Working with illustrator Mandy Nellestein was exactly that.
From our very first conversations, we shared a passion for creating more than just a story, we wanted to bring an entire world to life. A world where nature, animals, magic, and connection come together. Through her exquisite watercolor illustrations, Mandy captured exactly what Sandeloria is all about: not only what you see, but above all, what you feel.
In this interview, Mandy takes you behind the scenes of her creative process. She shares how each illustration gradually came to life, why atmosphere is always her starting point, and how she translated the deeper message of Sandeloria into artwork that sparks the imagination.

When you begin illustrating a story, how does the very first image form in your mind? Do you start with the words, the characters, or the feeling the story evokes?
As I read a story, images immediately begin to appear in my mind. These are mainly inspired by the atmosphere that surrounds the story. For me, atmosphere is the most important foundation of any illustration. If I can't capture that feeling, it becomes impossible for me to truly step into the world.
The characters exist within that atmosphere. If they are fictional, their personalities gradually develop into clear, familiar figures as I continue reading and processing the story. In the case of Sandeloria, inspired by Greetje's ideas and vision, this was Sun, the little squirrel.
Greetje's story carries a beautiful message. How did you try to make that message visible and tangible through your illustrations?
Absolutely. Besides creating illustrations that are rooted in atmosphere, this is the most important part of my work. The essence of what the author wants to share must also be conveyed through the artwork. The illustrations should not only accompany the story, they should carry its message and allow readers to experience it visually as well.
Were there any characters, moments, or scenes in the book that became especially meaningful to you while illustrating?
Whenever I'm working on an illustration, I genuinely fall in love with the characters I'm painting at that moment. That changes with every new piece I create. Once an illustration is finished, that intense feeling settles into a cherished memory, making space for the next artwork to emerge. The connection never disappears, it simply becomes part of the journey.
Looking back on the journey from the first sketches to the finished book, what has this experience brought you?
First and foremost, it brought me into contact with a wonderful family who approach life in a truly beautiful way. Their animals are not simply pets, they are cherished members of the family.
I also had the privilege of spending as much time as I needed working on the book, and I enjoyed every moment of it. One thing I underestimated, however, was the amount of time required to place every single spot exactly where it belonged. Of course, that level of precision was essential, but I hadn't anticipated how much time the watercolor paintings would take.
Thankfully, Greetje was always able to provide reference photos in exactly the right poses, so I never had to guess where each spot belonged on the horses or dogs. Capturing Jolie Lune's tiny facial expressions and likeness at such a small scale was another challenge, especially since watercolor leaves very little room for corrections. I truly hope I succeeded in doing her justice.
All in all, it has been an incredible privilege to create these illustrations. My greatest hope is that Sandeloria will spread its magical wings and find its way into the hearts of readers around the world—helping everyone discover that the Magical World is not nearly as far away as we sometimes think... and reminding us that it is something to treasure and protect.
