Communication and trust form the basis for everything that you do with your horse. Groundwork is a way of helping your horse learn and archieve balance. You can teach your horse to step under his center of gravity. Bending work can help to make this possible, just as lateral movements do.
The goals of groundwork
- The horse learns to perform the movements when we apply certain aids
- The horse gains balance
- Developing strength in the inside and outside back leg
- The horse develops more bending ability in body and limbs
- The horse develops more freedom of movement in his shoulders
During groundwork, you teach the movements to the horse in a way that is easiest for him. Often this is without bending. Once your horse understands this, you can continue to ask more and more of him. The purpose of groundwork is to establish a good relationship between trainer and horse.
